How can we transform cultural diversity into valuable resources at home?
This challenge was really interesting for me because I learned so many different methods that I can use in school to handle cultural diversity and to teach children about it. I think it is really important for children to see that they are different, but this is a good and not a bad thing. They have to be aware of the fact that human beings, although they belong to the same culture, can be very different. In this challenge I learned to teach children how to cope with differences and to make them aware of the causes of the differences. Only then are they able to treat everyone with dignity and respect.
If you ask me, it helped a lot to experience the different activities during this course. Now I know how to transform cultural diversity into school activities. So I realised that a teacher can include the differences of the children in the daily school life. For example the exercise where we answered questions while standing in a row. I can imagine that this would also work with questions in various subjects. For me the most important thing concerning this topic is that children take their differences as a chance and not as a problem. Only when they realise that being different is a good thing, school life can be more relaxed and there are not so many conflicts. Furthermore including cultural diversity into school helps to bring the global world into schools. In our modern society there exists no city without diversity. Therefore children are confronted with it in their everyday lives. School can exclude this, they have to include the results of globalisation. Moreover, exercises like the ones we did in the challenge, help children to develop a certain tolerance towards others.
Our classroom poster:
This poster needs to be made for the individual class, concerning the interests of each child. Children can see that they have many differences, but on the other hand they are quite similar to each other. It is important to work on the poster togehter with the children and include their own imagination about the topic.
